UPDATES EDITOR – THE CANADIAN ENCYCLOPEDIA
The Canadian Encyclopedia (TCE) is a free, bilingual online resource of over 25,000 fact-checked articles and learning tools about Canada’s history and culture. TCE has collaborated with the web developer, Plank, to create a new AI application that will search the complete breadth of TCE to identify and list articles that need updating. The Updates Editor for TCE will be responsible for entire workflow cycle, from managing the application’s output data to drafting the updates, through to publishing bilingual updates online. The Updates Editor will be someone with expertise or interest in Canadian history, science, industry, arts and civics across the range of topics overseen by our six subject editors. This person is passionate about the work of Historica Canada, has had experience working with a team to achieve deliverables in a timely fashion, and is enthusiastic about creating a legacy for all Canadians. The successful candidate is creative, driven and has experience working with expert and generalist Canadian authors (such as academics, writers, and community leaders) on a broad spectrum of topics relevant to the content of TCE.
This position is a full-time one-year contract beginning 10 September 2024. The work can be done remotely, or in a hybrid fashion, depending on the circumstances and wishes of the successful candidate. The position is supervised by the Program Manager of The Canadian Encyclopedia.
The responsibilities of the Updates Editor include:
• Assisting with the final testing of the new application;
• Overseeing the output data from the AI search application;
• Prioritizing articles for updates, and managing the workflow, based on quarterly targets;
• Verifying the information to be updated, researching where necessary;
• Writing article updates;
• Identifying new articles where replacements are necessary, and communicating with appropriate subject editor for direction;
• In the select cases where article updates will require commissioning authors, developing and managing relationships with consultants (contributors, fact-checkers, etc.) to meet editorial deadlines;
• Publishing these updates in English or French and preparing them for translation to either French or English. The updates editor will submit completed updated articles to the Program Manager, who will manage their translations;
• Consulting with TCE Program Manager on key editorial decisions and policies and confirming the update selections and overall workflow, and where necessary, on the delegation of some updates to a respective TCE editor;
• Tracking expenses, ensuring expenses remain within budgets, and reporting on variances;
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• A degree in history, journalism, communications, political science, and/or relevant work experience;
• Bilingualism (English and French, spoken and written) is required;
• Knowledge of diverse subjects, Canadian history and current events: please state any areas of specialization;
• Excellent writing and editing skills;
• Excellent research skills and attention to detail;
• Solid project management skills;
• Previous experience in testing software applications a plus;
• Ability to meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
• Previous experience in the online media and publishing industry;
• Strong budgeting and time-management skills;

Steps to apply:

2. Resumes and cover letters are reviewed within a week of the posting deadline and prospective candidates will be sent a behavioural assessment PI questionnaire.
3. Based on the results of the questionnaire, Historica Canada expects to invite 3-5 candidates to an initial interview via video call (approx. 1 hour). This interview will usually be with 2 Historica Canada staff. Some roles may require a short skills test, which would be provided following the interview.
4. Up to 2 candidates may be moved forward to a second interview with the President and Vice President of Operations and will later be asked to provide references.
5. We commit to notifying all interviewed applicants of the status of their submission within 6 weeks of the application deadline.
This is a one-year contract position beginning 10 September 2024. The annual salary is $52,400 less applicable statutory deductions.
